The Western Cape is partnering with Malaysia to spark the development of a halal food hub in South Africa, a move that has been declared “excellent” for the development of the province’s agroprocessing sector by Western Cape Economic Opportunities Minister Alan Winde.

The Western Cape government noted in a release on Thursday that Winde would officiate the signing of the cooperation agreement between the Western Cape Fine Food Initiative and the Malaysian Industry Government Group for High Technology, which was expected to foster partnerships between the halal industries of the two countries.

During his stay in Malaysia, Winde was informed of the value of halal food parks, clusters of manufacturing and service firms in the halal industry, in light of the growth of the sector, which was currently valued at more than $2.3-trillion.

The Western Cape sought to capture a share of this market, specifically in Africa.

The development of specialised food parks was one of the possible levers to increase the size of the Western Cape’s agoprocessing sector.

Speaking from Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur, where the twelfth International Halal Showcase was currently under way, Winde said: “Project Khulisa has identified agroprocessing as a key growth sector [for the Western Cape], with the potential to add up to 100 000 jobs and generate R26-billion for the economy under a high-growth scenario.

“The agreement is set to increase trade and economic opportunities between the two regions. Malaysia is a global leader in the development of halal standards. Our industry will be able to learn more from Malaysia’s international best practice and Western Cape producers will have increased market access.”
