The Cape Epic  (0.10 MB)

Company Announcement - The Cape Epic, Southern Africa’s premier mountain bike event, will be visiting Wellington on 20 and 21 March 2015. In order to welcome the event to our town and ensure that both participants and visitors enjoy a spectacular stay in Wellington many local initiatives are planned that will prove both memorable and exciting. On the 20th of March a huge procession is being organised in Wellington, starting at the Welgeleë Plein, all the way up Church Street and returning to the shopping centre. The Wellington Klopse, or drum majorettes, the horse brigade from the SAPS and locals on decorated bicycles, dressed in green and white costumes, will all welcome the riders. This is taking place around lunch time, just prior to the cyclist’s arrival - scheduled around 14h00.

Green and white will be the official Wellington Town colours for the Epic. The entire town will be decorated with green and white pom-poms, which are being made by local school children, students and other local organisations. Bicycle motifs will be stencilled on the procession route, on the pavements in the town. The Cape Peninsula University of Technology Wellington Campus will be hosting a special trolley race for the students after which they will decorate the sports field, where the tent town will be pitched.
The Landbou Vereninging Vereniging will be organising a tractor procession through town and at the five different entrances to Wellington. They will also assist with transport arrangements within town. MC Wasserye, a local laundromat, has been charged with the important task of washing all of the Epic participant’s clothing.

The Breytenbach Gallery will feature a special “I want to ride my bicycle’ exhibition. The artists that will be participating are Keith Dietrich, Strijdom van der Merwe, Marinda du Toit, Liekie Fouche, Ceramic Matters, Theo Kleynhans, Selwyn Pekeur, Diek Grobler and Michele Davidson. Special Landscape Art projects will be implemented at various locations which will be visible from the air by helicopter which will form part of the media coverage of Wellington’s hosting of the event. Filming of the landscape art will be done by helicopter fly-over.

At the different watering points along the route on Saturday the 21st of March – Welbedacht (07h15), Linton Park (07h45), Bosman’s Family Vineyard (08h05 – 10h40) and Doolhof (09h00 – 12h45), different events are being organised. At Welbedacht, No.6 Restaurant will be open for a special Epic breakfast. The restaurant will also be providing Epic Specials for the full duration of the ABSA Cape Epic. The Klopse will be welcoming the cyclists. Linton Park will be offering a burger breakfast, Champagne and orange juice with wine tastings commencing at 09h00. They will also be creating a welcome fly-over for all to see and enjoy.
Bosman’s family Vineyard is offering a special Bubbles & Breakfast on Saturday morning between 07h30 – 12h00. Bookings can be made at www.webtickets.co.za . The options include a coffee and a glass of Methode Cap Classique, as well as a complementary wine tasting.

Doolhof will also be organising a special breakfast, wine tasting and a fly-over. Wellington Tourism has arranged for the musicians at the Chill Zone in the Main Tent Village at www.webtickets.co.za CPUT and Wellington Wine Route will be organising the wine and wine prizes for the best cyclists of the day.

“The ABSA Cape Epic is one of the biggest global cycling events and positions Wellington as one of South Africa’s foremost Mountain Bike Destinations” concludes David Frandsen, the CEO of the Drakenstein Local Tourism Association. “We look forward to welcoming the many visitors and The ABSA Cape Epic participants to Wellington on the weekend of 21 to 23 March and we are sure with all the local festivities planned that their stay will be memorable.”
