From Creamer Media in Johannesburg, this is the Real Economy Report. The first Innovation Bridge event took place at the beginning of February. Keith Campbell was there.

The Innovation Bridge was held at the International Convention Centre of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. It was an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology, or DST, working with the National Intellectual Property Management Office, the Technology Innovation Agency and the South African Research and Innovation Management Association. DST Deputy Director-General Mmboneni Muofhe explains why the event was created.

Other news making headlines this week: ArcelorMittal South Africa says it’s losing up to R1.5-million an hour during ‘uncontrolled’ load shedding; Engineering students showcase their talents with their mobile palletising solution; And, a new study outlines ways to decouple growth from environmental degradation.

ArcelorMittal South Africa head Paul O’Flaherty has described the latest round of load shedding as “uncontrolled” and reports that, when interrupted, the JSE-listed company is losing the equivalent of R1.5-million an hour.

Engineering students from Stellenbosch University, in the Western Cape, took top honours during the 2014 PneuDrive Challenge prize-giving ceremony for their innovative Movipal mobile palletising solution.

Following the launch of ‘The State of Green Technologies in South Africa’ study, the Academy of Science of South Africa says it aims to increase the development of green technologies as a way of stimulating economic growth, creating job opportunities and mitigating ecological risks.
