Voith Turbo (Pty) Ltd South Africa is pleased to announce the appointment of Lavinia Khangala as independent non-executive board member effective 1st August 2014. She joins Michael Sanders, Klaus Fakenstein and Charl Folscher on the board and will help ensure good corporate governance with her legal background and wealth of experience in risk and compliance.

Khangala holds a B Proc, LLB as well as a Masters of Law degree from the University of Cape Town. She is an admitted Attorney, Conveyancer and Notary Public of the High Court and a Certified Financial Planner for the Financial Planning Institute. Khangala started her career in the financial services industry heading up legal and compliance departments of various financial institutions such as Investec Asset Management, Alexander Forbes and BoE. Khangala also spent a few years at the Peninsula University of Technology as a Senior Lecturer in Corporate Law. A few years ago, she decided to set up her own consulting practice, initially providing legal and compliance services to an asset manager and subsequently offering legal and employee benefits consulting services to retirement funds. Charl Folscher, Chief Administrative Officer of Voith Turbo (Pty) Ltd, welcomes Khangala to the board. “Lavinia has a wealth of experience and the opportunity to assist us with the changes that face Voith in South Africa. I have no doubt that she will make a valuable contribution to Voith.”

Khangala is no stranger to the position as she currently serves on six other boards as a non-executive member. “My numerous responsibilities in my capacity as a non-executive director at Voith will include making a contribution to the strategic plan, scrutinising the performance of the executive directors and providing an external perspective on risk management” says Khangala.

Khangala is chairperson of the Telkom Retirement Fund and the Council for Geoscience Pension and Provident Funds. She currently serves on the Audit Committee, Investment Committee, Remuneration Committee and Communication committee of various Retirement Funds such as Eskom, Hollard, Alexander Forbes as well as the Building Industry Pension Fund.

Having served on the board of the Principal Officer Association for few years, Khangala is currently also an Independent Principal Officer and Trustee of a number of Retirement Funds in the public and private sectors.  In recent months she was appointed as non-executive director and member of the Audit Committee for a medium-sized company.
