Africa-based individuals and companies that made a significant contribution to the continent’s utility, energy and water professions and projects in 2014 will be honoured at the 2015 African Utility Week and Clean Power Africa conference and exhibition, which will take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from May 12 to 14.

African Utility Week organsier Spintelligent event director Evan Schiff highlights that the African Utility Week Industry Awards, which will take place on May 13, is designed to celebrate the African utility industry’s triumphs and successes in the previous year.

Industry stakeholders have nominated candidates for ten award categories, which range from Utility Executive of the Year to Clean Energy Project of the Year. Schiff adds that this years’ awards will see the addition of a new category, namely the Outstanding Woman in Power/Water award.

The 2015 African Utility Week Industry Awards’ panel of judges includes former CEO of State-owned power utility Eskom Brian Dames, Southern Africa national electricity companies body Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) chief market analyst for Zimbabwe Musara Beta and Malawi State-owned utility Electricity Supply Corporation distribution and customer services director Peter Mtonda.

“It is gratifying to see how much excitement these awards have generated in the industry,” says Schiff, noting that last year, tickets to the awards ceremony were sold out and the ceremony was a huge success. “Needless to say, there is a lot of interest again this year from the utility sector to enter the awards and to attend.”

He explains that the 2014 awards ceremony, which was African Utility Week’s first awards ceremony, was attended by some 500 leading executives from across the power, water, renewable energy, finance and investment spheres in Africa, and was declared a long overdue addition to what is considered the largest utility gathering of its kind on the continent.

“We remain an event ‘for the industry, by the industry’ and have received numerous nominations from various power professionals on the continent. “We look forward to sharing the industry’s triumphs with all stakeholders.

Together, we will honour those companies and executives who have been responsible for pioneering new frontiers, pushing boundaries, inspiring others and achieving growth for Africa,” he concludes.
