Turffontein residents will soon have a stormwater system that will reduce flooding, retain water, recharge ground water and prevent water overflow that can be harmful to grass and plants.

The storm water drainage system, which cost R47 803 482.92, according to JDA CEO Christo Botes, is now 80% complete.

The JDA  on behalf of the City of Johannesburg will deliver the JRA’s modern stormwater approaches, which aim to rebuild the natural water cycle to store run-off water for a certain time to recharge ground water and to use the collected water for irrigation or household supply for the communities in Turffontein by the end of October 2018
The Turffontein Precinct drains a total catchment area of 4500ha, which has an average slope of 8% and high percentage of impervious areas. This results in high surface run-off from most storm events. It has been noted that some regions exceed the 8% slope.

For ease of implementation, the Turffontein Stormwater Masterplan project has been divided into two Phase1A (complete) and Phase 1B (underway).

The study area is divided into four drainage regions, each off which drains into one of the following rivers:

  • Booysens Spruit
  • Natal Spruit
  • Wemmer Spruit
  • Rietvlei

The construction of the Turffontein stormwater and roads by the JDA and JRA has significantly changed the hydraulic properties of the precinct area. Depressions have been raised to prevent ponding and flooding. Surfaces and conduits have been constructed to drain run-off more efficiently, for the benefit of communities around Turffontein and surrounding neighbourhood.
