The deal has been signed by Deltec and Commercial Com- ponents, which is part of Com-mercial Vehicle Holdings, a division of the Imperial Group.
Deltec GM Clive Guest says trucks would previously arrive with prefitted batteries, but that the Tyco plant has now decided to source batteries locally for the International, DAF and Renault truck ranges it assembles.
Deltec’s sales to the Apex plant will potentially number between R4-million and R5-million a year, with Tyco saving up to R500 000 a year.
The deal was cemented when Varta (which supplies Deltec with batteries) committed to supplying at competitive pricing.
Varta is Europe’s largest battery manufacturer.
“The manufacturer’s support allows us to provide a high-quality product at competitive prices,” says Guest.
The company will supply Tyco with its maintenance-free batteries – specifically, those falling within the 100-ampere-hour to 180- ampere-hour range.
Deltec is a distributor of VB Batteries (sourced from France), Varta (Germany), Johnson Con-trols (the US) and Global (Korea) products for the Southern African region.
Other significant Deltec customers include Bell Equipment, BAE Land Systems and Cummins Diesel.
Deltec was acquired by MICRO-mega on October 1, 2004.
