Name and Location
Trans-Anatolian natural gas pipeline project (Tanap), Azerbaijan and Turkey.

Client
Tanap Doğalaz İletim, a special-purpose company with Socar of Azerbaijan, Botas of Turkey and BP as shareholders.

Project Description
Tanap will deliver gas from natural gas reserves located in the Shah Deniz-2 gasfield and other gasfields, in Azerbaijan, and from natural gasfields in countries neighbouring Turkey, to domestic markets.

It will also transport the natural gas to European countries through Turkey.

Tanap will establish a pipeline from the Georgia–Turkey border, traversing the provinces of Kars, Erzurum, Erzincan, Bayburt, Gümüşhane, Giresun, Sivas, Yozgat, Kırşehir, Kırıkkale, Ankara, Eskişehir, Bilecik, Kütahya, Bursa, Balıkesir, Çanakkale, Tekirdağ and Edirne until it ends at the Greek border in the İpsala district of Edirne.

The length of the pipeline within the borders of Turkey to the Türkgözü/Malkoçlar–Bulgaria border is about 1 900 km, with the connection to Greece about 67 km.

Tanap has a terrestrial pipe diameter of 56”, and two 36” pipes are planned for the marine crossing through the Sea of Marmara. The plan is to build eight compressor stations, with one located at the point of entry and seven along the pipeline.

Pigging stations, block valve stations, offtake stations, cathodic protection systems and the metering station are the other above-ground installations to be built. The temporary construction facilities, such as the camps, pipe storage area, power transmission lines and access roads, will also be required for the construction of the pipeline and above-ground installations.

Value
The project is expected to cost $11-billion to complete.

Duration
Tanap is planned to be completed in 2018, with the first 16-billion cubic meters of gas expected in the initial stage in 2019, gradually escalating to 23-billion cubic metres in 2020 and 31-billion cubic metres in 2026.

Latest Developments
ABB has won a large contract for Tanap to bring Azerbaijan’s natural gas directly to Europe. ABB will deliver the control infrastructure to contribute to safe, secure and reliable operation of the pipeline throughout its lifetime.

ABB will deliver the control system, telecommunications, pipeline monitoring and security systems, including fiber-optic cables, to transmit data along the pipelines. The pipeline will be controlled and automated by ABB’s System 800xA process automation system. The software solutions will integrate the supervisory control and data acquisition systems and the telecommunications that control the gas flows, detect leakages or intrusions and make closed-circuit television coverage available for safety and security purposes.

ABB’s delivery will be a business-led collaboration between ABB in Turkey and ABB in the United Kingdom.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
ABB (control infrastructure).

On Budget and on Time?
Not stated.
