Project Description
The project aims to accommodate forecast growth in trade at the Townsville port and address current capacity constraints.

The project entails the deepening and widening of the existing shipping lanes, construction of an outer northern harbour at the existing port, six new ship berths and a new western breakwater.

The project will also include the capital dredging of 11.4-million cubic metres of sediment, which will be reused to create 152 ha of reclaimed land for new berths, bulk cargo and a rail loop.

The project will be completed in three phases.

Stage 1 involves widening of the channel and includes the construction of Berth 12.

Stage 2 involves the construction of three berths and swing basin construction in the outer harbour.

Stage 3 involves the construction of two berths and the deepening of the channel.

Jobs to be Created
Stage 1 will create about 175 jobs and Stage 2 and 3 two-hundred jobs each.

Value
$1.64-billion.

Duration
Stage 1 is expected to start in 2017 and be completed in 2022.

Stage 2 and Stage 3 are expected to take five years from the start of construction.

Latest Developments
The environmental-impact statement for the expansion of the port has been released for public comment and will be open for comment until November 7.
