Proprietary wear resistant coatings from Thermaspray present an effective and affordable coating solution for a key customer, protecting critical components and improving reliability on used underground mining machines.

The mining environment is notorious for its tough conditions; heat, dust, water and mud play havoc with machine, equipment and component performance and reliability leading, to premature failure. Alongside spirallingrepair costs, unplanned stoppages and subsequent downtime can have a massive negative impact on productivity and production levels.

“When our customer, who is in the business of repairing used mining machines, approached us for a solution to reduce costs, we did not hesitate in recommending Thermaspray proprietary wear resistant coatings,” says Thermaspray Sales Engineer, Johan Squara. “

Specially developed by Thermaspray, this world-class corrosion and wear resistant coating is tough enough to survive even the most stringent of conditions. “The proprietary wear resistant coating is applied to used intermediate housings as well as to pistons for the emergency brakes on the customer’s machines such as load haul and dump trucks,” explains Squara.

The coated housings and pistons offer a lower coefficient of friction and are far superior in wear resistance compared to OEM components, outlasting and outperforming OEM components by far. This special coating provides superior component protection and contributes to the durability and extended life cycle of the machines.

“Our ability to meet the customer’s requirements for quality protective coatings and on time delivery has seen the customer making use of our services for over two years now. In addition to reducing costs for our customer, end-users are reporting improved machine reliability and uptime,” notes Squara.

He adds, “Our turnkey solutions extend beyond our product offering. We collect the components from the customer’s premises and following the application of the coating by our expert technicians at our facility in Olifantsfontein, Johannesburg, we deliver the coated product to the customer.”

“All business and industry are under pressure to reduce costs and improve efficiencies. Thermaspray’s proprietary wear resistant coatings contribute significantly to the longevity of machinery and equipment and is an extremely effective way to drive down costs and drive up and productivity,” concludes Squara.

Thermaspray, in a joint venture with Cape Town-based Surcotec, offers an extensive portfolio of engineering and thermal spray coating solutions that extend component life cycles to assist OEM and end-user clients across southern Africa in reducing costs and increasing production.

The companies’ world-class quality wear- and corrosion-resistant thermal spray coatings, Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) cladding and Polymer coatings (in partnership with Plasma Coatings USA and Diamant Metallplastic Germany) are augmented by a host of specialised allied services.
