JSE-listed sugar producer Tongaat Hulett has entered into negotiations with regard to the potential sale of Tongaat Hulett Starch.

The division is Africa’s largest producer of starch, glucose and related products. It converts more than 670 000 t/y of bought-in maize into starch and starch-based products, as well as manufactures a range of related products, including unmodified maize starch and refined glucose products used in the manufacture of beverages and other industrial products.

The starch operations include four wet-million plants, three in Gauteng and one in the Western Cape.
