Unit 1 of Eskom’s Ingula pumped storage scheme entered into commercial operation on Tuesday, with the three units now in operation contributing nearly 1 000 MW to the national grid.

“The commercial operation of Unit 1 is further proof that we are well on our way to ensure security of power supply to South African homes and businesses. I am truly excited that we are on track to deliver on our commitment to bring all new build projects on line timeously,” said Eskom CEO Brian Molefe.

Units 4 and 2 started commercial operations in June and August respectively.

Unit 3, which remains on track to reach commercial operation in the first half of 2017, has been synchronised to the national grid but is undergoing repairs after problems were experienced during the testing phase.

Once completed, the four units will produce a total of 1 332 MW.
