CAPSA  (0.30 MB)

Company Announcement - Close to 500 delegates, 30 sponsors and 50 exhibitors are expected to attend this prestigious conference. Held in southern Africa since 1969,CAPSA is acknowledged globally as a premier conference in the field of flexible pavement engineering. It will once again offer practitioners the opportunity to interact and to share their professional skills with colleagues from the subcontinent and abroad.

At the 10th CAPSA in 2011 sustainable practice in road construction was entrenched as an underpinning value set in road design and construction. Within this framework, CAPSA 2015, will explore innovative practice and advance its implementation in pavement engineering practice. The conference programme is structured around the following themes and topics which forms the basis of paper content and conference sessions.

  • Optimising structural design in new construction and rehabilitation
  • Up-to-date procurement practice for products and services to promote efficient, sustainable and innovative delivery;
  • The design of asphalt layers and spray seals to ensure efficient application and adequate performance;
  • Construction, practice and materials assessment for a high level of efficiency
  • Low volume surfaced roads to promote access and mobility in southern Africa

Master-Class on Bituminous Binder Rheology
To give impetus to the transition in South Africa to a performance grade specification framework Dr John D’Angelo, a bitumen specialist from USA, will present a Sabita sponsored Master Class on bituminous binder rheology on the second day of the conference. This will begin with fundamental considerations such as modelling binder behaviour, binder evaluation such as rheology test configurations, behaviour within and outside of the linear-viscous range and extending to the performance grading of binders.
The manner in which binder resistance to fatigue, viscous deformation, temperature fracture and consistency during handling and application should define the specification framework and associated test configurations, will be explained. The Master Class will lead into a Panel Discussion on the following day, where Dr D’Angelo will be joined by other international binder experts including Drs Rowe (USA), Erkens (Netherlands) and Papagiannakis (USA), to address pertinent questions about binder technology. In particular, the performance related test methods within realistic stress-strain environments, model development, ageing simulation and climatic considerations, will be explored in this interactive session.

Keynote speakers:

John A. D’Angelo
Chief Operating Officer, D’Angelo Consulting, LLC.
Dr. D’Angelo is the chief operating officer of a small consulting firm specializing in asphalt materials testing, pavement design, construction operations, construction quality assurance and pavement forensic analysis. Previously he worked for the US Federal Highway Administration for over 32 years.

He has worked in the areas of construction management, pavement design, materials testing, and quality control. He has also worked extensively in asphalt binders, mixture design, warm mix asphalt and recycling. Dr. D’Angelo was instrumental in the implementation and continued development of the Superpave Binder and mixture tests and specifications. He has published numerous papers on asphalt material testing and quality control. He is also a member of the Transportation Research Board, The Association of Asphalt Pavement Technologists, The Canadian Technical Asphalt Association, International Society for Asphalt Pavements and ASTM.
