Thames Tideway Tunnel – East tunnel project, UK
Name and Location
Thames Tideway Tunnel – East tunnel project, UK.
Client
Tideway.
Project Description
Tideway is delivering the biggest infrastructure project ever undertaken by the UK water industry. The East works package is one of three making up the Thames Tideway Tunnel, a major new sewer, urgently needed to protect the tidal river Thames from millions of tonnes of untreated sewage being discharged into the river and to modernise London’s Victorian sewerage network for the twenty-first century. The project will result in 25 km of tunnels being built beneath London. The East tunnel package includes the construction of a 5.5 km section of the main 25km tunnel and a 4.6 km connecting tunnel for combined rainwater and wastewater – both of which will serve the east of London.
Located between 45 m and 65 m below ground, the two tunnels will be excavated by tunnel boring machines using slurry pressure balance technology. The main tunnel will have an interior diameter of 7.2 m, while the diameter of the connecting tunnel will be 5 m.
The East section also includes the construction of five large shafts.
Value
The contract for the East works package is valued at £605-million.
