Telecommunications group Telkom on Monday launched a pilot programme to test its latest high-speed broadband technology.

CEO Nombulelo Moholi said that the company, as part of its strategy to transform its access network, started rolling out new-generation access network kits in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape to test broadband speeds up to 40 Mb/s until January next year.

To date, 53 multiservice access nodes were deployed to service five regions comprising Benmore Gardens, Fourways, Waterkloof, Durban North and Durbanville.

“A core part of our strategy is to lead in the data and broadband space, as well as the fixed mobile convergence market. The timeous launch of this pilot indicates the focused execution of our strategy,” she said.

The pilot would test the field technical and operational readiness of the technology, while evaluating the customer experience in a controlled environment.

Telkom has been revamping its core and transmission networks, employing FTTx technology to meet the needs of its dispersed customer base and vast geography in South Africa.
