With constant advances taking place across the engineering, design and information and communication technology fields, South Africa is at the forefront of a major technology boom, which the Technology University Innovator event seeks to showcase.

Run by leading technology trade show Tech Expo Africa, the event is a large gathering of technology trendsetters from around the world, where a diversity of technology and engineer-ing talent is showcased at South Africa’s major universities during October and November.

Final-year undergraduates, honours, master’s and doctoral students from top universities in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth are given a chance by Tech Expo Africa to present their work to notable venture capitalists and start-up companies.

With technology companies being present at this showcase, this provides an opportunity to recruit students to work at these companies after the completion of their studies.

The projects are split into two categories, namely the computer science category and the information technology category.

Each company will be able to witness how the students present their projects. Five companies will have the opportunity to have a representative act as one of the five judges for each university. They will choose the top ten projects from each university.

Following this, one winner from each university will continue on to the final round of the Top Tech Innovator Award, which will take place at the 2015 Tech Expo Africa.

The Technology University Innovator event will take place at the University of Pretoria on October 22 and the University of the Witwatersrand on October 28.

In the Western Cape, the event will take place at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology on October 24, at the University of the Western Cape on November 6 and the University of Cape Town on November 12.

In the Free State, the event will take place at the Central University of Technology on October 23 and the University of the Free State on October 24.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the event will take place at the University of KwaZulu-Natal on October 30 and at the Durban University of Technology on October 17.

In the Eastern Cape, the event will be at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University on October 30.
