Name of the Project
Tasiast solar project.

Location
Mauritania.

Project Owner/s
Kinross Gold.

Project Description
In an effort to reduce its greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions, Kinross is proceeding with the development of a photovoltaic solar power plant at the Tasiast mine, with a power generation capacity of 34 MW and a battery storage facility of 18 MW.

The plant is expected to reduce GHG emissions by up to 50 000 t/y, or an estimated 530 000 t over the life-of-mine, saving about 180-million litres of fuel over the same period.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
$55-million.

Planned Start/End Date
Site activities, such as geotechnical drilling for solar panel foundations, are expected to start in the second quarter of 2022, with the plant scheduled to be completed in the third quarter of 2023.

Latest Developments
Construction of the solar field and battery system is complete, with first solar power delivered to the Tasiast grid in December 2023.

Commissioning of the battery system and energy management system will continue in early 2024, supporting the solar field and battery system integration and power ramp-up.

During the first quarter of 2024, grid scenario testing involving incumbent generators, the solar field, and battery systems will continue toward ensuring stable power.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
None stated.
