Tanga cement project, Tanzania.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of a clinker and a cement grinding plant on an area spanning over 6 km to produce 1.5-million tons a year of cement in Maweni, in the port city of Tanga, in Tanzania. The capacity of the Tanga cement plant is expected to be the largest in both East and Central Africa.

Value
The cost of the project is estimated at $120-million.

Portions of the finance have been put aside by a consortium of regional development finance institutions, such as the East African Development Bank (EADB), the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and the Eastern and Southern African Trade and Development Bank, known as the Preferential Trade Area Bank (PTA Bank).

Duration
The project was scheduled to be operational by 2011.

Client
Kenya’s Athi River Mining cement company through its subsidiary, Maweni Limestone.
