TAAG to launch direct flights between Durban and Luanda, early next year
TAAG Angola Airlines (TAAG) announced on Thursday that it would be implementing a direct flight between Luanda, the Angolan capital, and South Africa’s number one port city, Durban, during the first quarter of next year. Luanda is also a port city, on the South Atlantic Ocean, while Durban is on the Indian Ocean.
Passengers can already travel on a single ticket between Luanda and Durban, but this currently requires a transfer in Johannesburg. While the Johannesburg-Luanda leg is operated by TAAG itself, the Johannesburg-Durban leg is operated by a South African domestic airline, partnering with the Angolan national flag carrier.
At the same time, TAAG announced that it would start direct flights between Luanda and the Ghanaian capital city of Accra on November 30.
“Please be advised that Durban (South Africa) and Accra (Ghana) are new destinations (TAAG did not operate in those cities before), reflecting the company’s growth and expansion footprint into markets with high demand and international traffic,” said the company in its press statement.
TAAG was founded in Luanda in 1938. It currently operates services to 12 international and 14 domestic destinations. Its current fleet is composed of Boeing 777-300ER and 777-200ER widebody airliners, Boeing 737-700 single-aisle airliners and De Havilland Canada Dash 8-Q400 twin turboprop regional airliners. Reportedly, it operates five 777-300ERs, three 777-200ERs, seven 737-700s and six Dash 8-Q400s.
