PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Sumatra Copper & Gold has started underground production of high-grade ore at its Tembang gold/silver operation, in Indonesia.

Construction of the Tembang project started in November last year, and first gold pour was achieved in September this year, about eight weeks ahead of schedule.

Sumatra had previously said that the combined effect of commissioning the processing plant ahead of schedule, the earlier-than-anticipated ramp-up of the processing plant to nameplate capacity, and a delay in the permitting and delivery of explosives, had led to a shortfall in supply of high-grade ore from the openpit mines at Tembang, as well as the Belinau underground mine.

As a result, Sumatra has been focused on establishing multiple underground development headings at Belinau to accelerate high-grade ore production. Fine-tuning of the openpit schedules was also continuing with a view to optimise the delivery of high-grade ore.

The development of the openpit mines was progressing as planned, with the Berenai and Asmar pits supplying the majority of the ore currently being processed at the plant.

The mill-feed head grade was expected to steadily increase as additional higher-grade ore was accessed from the openpits and underground mines.

At full production, Tembang was expected to produce about 33 000 oz/y of gold and 345 000 oz/y of silver at a cash operating cost of $470/oz.
