Engineering and technology specialist Steinmüller Engineering has opened a branch office in South Africa, which will focus on providing services to the power and industrial markets in South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.

The company was formed in Germany in 2003 and, in June 2014, was acquired by IHI Corporation, of Japan, having developed a successful record in executing complex projects in the European and international power markets.

South African branch office GM Hans Marquardt says the company should not be confused with Steinmüller Africa, which is part of the Bilfinger Group.

The Sandton office, he adds, has been set up to enable the company to improve its proximity and service to existing South African clients, while expanding its offering to other industrial sectors in South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.

There is also an intention to develop, over time, local sourcing of plant, components and equipment.

“While our Germany based head office has been working with Eskom since 2006, the current interest of energy intensive users in alternative sources of power supply is growing and our technology and engineering services are now available to local independent power producers and companies operating in the petrochemical, mining, steel, pulp and paper, sugar and other industries.”

Steinmüller Engineering’s main fields of activity are consulting, planning and engineering services for steam generators, firing systems, desulphurisation, denitrification, dedusting and other gas cleaning systems for power generation, petrochemical and other industrial applications.
