Indonesian steel producer PT Gunung has ordered an Arccess electric arc furnace (EAF) and a ladle furnace from German engineering company SMS Siemag.

The furnaces are for the producer’s new steelmaking plant complex in Bekasi, West Java.

The furnaces are rated for yearly production of 1.2-million tons of steel. The range of charge materials for the EAF includes scrap, hot briquetted iron and hot metal.

With its new equipment, PT Gunung will produce high- quality steel and supply liquid steel to the slab caster, which it also ordered from SMS Siemag.

SMS Siemag’s scope of sup- ply includes engineering services, mechanical and hydraulic equipment and the X-Pact electrical and automation systems, which will be commissioned according to SMS Siemag’s ‘Plug and Work’ concept.

Commissioning of the furnaces is scheduled for the middle of 2013.

EAFs of the Arccess series are designed to ensure highly efficient use of electrical and chemical energy. The EAF will be equipped with the latest-generation patented SMS Injection System, or SIS, an oxygen injection system which combines injection and burner technologies.

This concept ensures high productivity, while keeping production costs low, the German company states.

At the Bekasi works, PT Gunung operates a long product line for the production of sections and wire rods, as well as a flat product line for the production of heavy plates and pipes.

SMS group of companies has, to date, supplied all major production lines at the plant.
