Name and Location
Speyside biomass power station project, Scotland.

Client
Speyside Renewable Energy Partnership.

Project Description
The new woodchip combined heat and power plant will supply 87.4 GWh/y of renewable electricity to the national grid.

The plant will be fuelled by sustainable forestry by-products sourced from the local area, one of the UK’s most productive forestry regions. The plant will also generate 76.8 GWh/y of renewable heat for the adjacent Macallan whisky distillery, providing about 90% of the steam needed in the distillation process.

Using biomass instead of natural gas to generate heat will enable the distillery to reduce its greenhouse-gas emissions by more than 17 500 t of carbon dioxide equivalent, comparable to taking nearly 8 000 cars off the road.

Value
£74-million.

Duration
The project will be completed in 2016.

Latest Developments
Speyside has been guaranteed £48-million in finance by the UK government.

International infrastructure investor John Laing and the Green Investment Bank are to invest the remaining £26-million.

Mott MacDonald is the lenders’ technical adviser for the project. In its role as lenders’ technical adviser, Mott MacDonald completed a technical and environmental review on behalf of Infrastructure UK and will monitor construction until the project is completed in 2016.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Mott MacDonald (lenders’ technical adviser).

On Budget and on Time?
