Project Description
The project comprises the construction of a gas pipeline across the Black Sea to Southern and Central Europe.
The offshore section of the pipeline will run on the seabed under the Black Sea from the Russkaya compressor station on the Russian coast to the coast of Bulgaria.
The Black Sea section will be about 931 km long, with a maximum depth of more than 2 km and a design capacity of 63-billion cubic metres.
The onshore section in Europe will be 1 455 km long and will traverse Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and Slovenia, with the end point in Tarvisio, Italy. Gas laterals to Croatia and Republika Srpska from Serbia may be constructed in future.
Four strings will be constructed, each with a capacity of 15.75-billion cubic metres a year.
Gas to be conveyed through the South Stream system will be fed from the unified gas supply system of Russia.

The first string of the offshore gas pipeline is expected to be commissioned in late 2015.
The gas pipeline will reach its full capacity in 2018/19.
Latest Developments
The Rasovo compressor station site, in Bulgaria, hosted a ceremony for the welding of the first joint of the Bulgarian section of the South Stream gas pipeline in October.
A 540 km linear section of the gas pipeline, 366 km of loop lines and three compressor stations will built in Bulgaria. The Bulgarian section will cost an estimated €3.5-billion to build.
