South Africa has dropped down the global ranking of most competitive manufacturing regions, according to data released by Deloitte on Wednesday.

While the country is still seen as the most competitive manufacturing country in Africa, it has dropped three places globally since 2013 to come in at 27th position, according to the Deloitte 2016 Global Manufacturing Competitiveness Index.

The study, which is conducted every three years, ranked China as the most competitive country in the world with the U.S, Germany, Japan and South Korea rounding off the top five.

South Africa’s other partners in the Brics grouping (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) didn’t do particularly well this time around either. Brazil, at 29th, experienced the steepest fall from eighth position in 2013, and Russia was down from 28th to 32nd.

India dropped from number four in 2013 to number 11 this year, but Deloitte pointed out that the country looked set to improve its position. The company said India was expected to be ranked number five by 2020.
