Mississippi Silicon LLC. placed an order with SMS Siemag, Germany, www.sms-siemag.com for the supply of two submerged arc furnaces for the production of silicon. The annual capacity of the two furnaces is 33,000 tons. Interesting features are the rotating furnace shells which avoid cold areas in the melt and prevent carbide deposits on the furnace walls.

Apart from the two SAFs for the production of metallurgical silicon, SMS Siemag is also supplying the electrode columns, the material handling system, the hydraulic systems and the X-Pact® electrical and automation systems. Also the cranes, the chemical laboratory and the stoking and charging machines are included in the scope of supply. The new works is being built in Burnsville, Mississippi, USA. It will be one of the most efficient silicon works of its kind in the world. The aim of the project is to supply silicon to nearby customers in the alumi-num, automotive and chemical industries. The works is scheduled to commence operation in July 2015.

The project is being realized with the assistance of the KFW IPEX Bank*, which is providing the outside capital under the scope of the project financing covered by Hermes. SMS Siemag AG is a company of the SMS group which, under the roof of the SMS Holding GmbH, consists of a group of global players in machinery and plant construction in steel and nonferrous metals processing. Its workforce of more than 13,500 employees generates sales worldwide totaling EUR 3.3 billion.

Mississippi Silicon is a strategic alliance between the Brazilian Vicintin family and the US company Clean Tech, LLC. In a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, January 13, 2014, the project was officially launched by the Governor of the Federal State of Mississippi, Mr. Phil Bryant.
