The company igus displays its advanced tribo-tape product range at the 2018 Hannover Messe

As a sliding surface, the tribo-tape reduces abrasion during linear movements, allows easy sliding and reduces wear. The film is also already being used as edge protection and product protection by lining metal parts in packaging systems or conveyor systems.

The iglidur tribo-tapes are tribologically optimised, which makes them extremely resistant to wear compared to standard materials. At the 2018 Hannover Messe, igus showed its range of tribo-tape films with new sizes and advanced adhesive backing.

The tribo-tape films from igus are used wherever a smooth, silent, simple and lubrication-free sliding is required. For this reason, igus liners are already used in furniture construction, for example for adjustments. The iglidur liners are impressive in the wood industry as well, where dust and chips prevail. For example, to simplify the operation of a saw when cutting wood fibre insulation boards, the tribo-tape ensures easy movement of the rotating stop on the saw blade. Since the iglidur liners are completely lubrication-free, settling sawdust cannot stick to the guidance.

To increase the service life of the extremely wear-resistant films, the motion plastics specialist has further developed the adhesive backing. A new adhesive now provides even better adhesion of the film. In addition, the new adhesive is FDA-compliant, making it suitable for use in the food industry.

Extreme wear resistance to standard materials

The film materials were able to prove their high wear resistance in the in-house test laboratory spread over 2,750 square metres. In a wear test against a stainless steel pin, all four tribo-tapes scored up to 10 times better values compared to PTFE glass fabric and PTFE bronze compounds. In addition, the materials display low abrasion and are lubrication-free and maintenance-free.

Four high-performance polymers for different applications

The blue liner made of the FDA-compliant iglidur material A160 is highly resistant to media and meets the stringent requirements for hygiene and safety in the food industry. Due to its blue colour, the material is also visually detectable. With the material B160, the wear resistance has now been increased once more. Due to its black colour, iglidur B160 can also be discretely assimilated in visible areas, for instance in the furniture industry. The material W160 has been developed for hygiene-sensitive industries.

It has antibacterial properties and is used in machines for dental hardening or sterilisation. In addition, iglidur W160 contains UV-stabilising additives, so that its material properties do not change even in light-induced oxidation.

The fourth tribo-tape is made from the high-temperature specialist iglidur V400: it is extremely heat-resistant and can be used at temperatures up to 200 degrees, with adhesion up to 160 degrees. Due to its extreme wear resistance, iglidur V400 is suitable for use at high loads and temperatures and is also resistant to a variety of media.

Universal use with new sizes

iglidur tribo-tapes are universally applicable and can be easily cut. The iglidur liners A160, B160 and W160 are available in standard widths of 20, 50, 100 and 500 millimetres and a thickness of 0.5 and 1 millimetres. The iglidur V400 is available in the standard width of 120 millimetres and a film thickness of 0.5 millimetres. All tribo-tapes can be delivered with and without adhesive backing. In addition, igus offers the cutting of special geometries or special widths.
