Sixteen South Africans are among New African magazine’s 100 Most Influential Africans, including the country’s students – following the recent ‘feesmustfall’ protests that swept across universities in all provinces.

Those listed came from a range of sectors including politics, business, civil society, arts and culture, technology and the media.

“It takes all citizens to build South Africa’s reputation and change perceptions about our country. This applies to our continent as well.  Your actions and achievements say to the world that African citizens are flying our respective national flags in a range of areas, which will ultimately contribute to the implementation of Agenda 2063.

“Nominees also say to other citizens of the continent that the efforts of individuals can make a difference,” Brand South Africa CEO Kingsley Makhubela said.

Among the 16 South Africans listed were African Union Commission chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma; United Nations Women director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka; former President Thabo Mbeki; opposition parties Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema and Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane; Glencore CEO Ivan Glasenberg; entrepreneur Elon Musk and comedian Trevor Noah.
