Significant growth for slings manufacturer

Since its decision to invest in existing equipment instead of buying new products, nylon web slings and endless round polyester slings manufacturer and distributor Kelmeg Lifting Services (KLS) has experienced significant growth over the past two years, with manufacturing output increasing 40%, says KLS factory manager Rodney Young, who was appointed at the time of KLS’s acquisition by welding and construction-related equipment supplier Renttech in 2011.

KLS manufactures a range of high-quality lifting accessories, including polyester slings, web slings, endless round polyester slings, steel wire slings, chain blocks and cargo securing straps.

Under the brand name Unilift, the company is well represented in the construction, power generation, petrochemicals, pulp and paper, engineering, marine, agriculture, transport and mining industries.

Rather than focusing on the end-user, KLS relies on its wide distributor network in South Africa and abroad, and has built up strong relationships with each of its distributors.

Further, developments in the offshore oil and gas industry have led to KLS widening its distribution net in other parts of Africa.

In 2012, the company achieved the ISO 9001:2008 certification. KLS’s drive for improve-ment prompted the company’s decision to be audited by a third party, which is why it chose the International Organisation for Standardisation as its benchmark.

Manufacturing a high-quality product has always been KLS’s main focus and, according to Young, the company adheres strictly to the highest possible industry standards.

“We also manufacture according to the SANS 94/1 2003 and SANS 94/2 2003 standards, as well as the EN 1492/1 and 1492/2 standards. When it comes to lifting and rigging equipment, safety is paramount, which is why we conduct an extremely stringent testing regime. “This includes involving third-party organ-isations for batch testing, such as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research,” highlights Young.

While much of KLS’s focus has been on improving existing products, the company has also brought new products to market, which represent “new ideas based on existing concepts”, notes Young.

“Our strategy is to seek new ways of doing things and to identify new materials and appli-cations with an even greater quality product as the final goal,” he adds.

Some of KLS’s product line extensions include tool protection – such as its Tool Spider – a lanyard used to protect tools when working at height, cargo nets, and a range of 4 × 4 vehicle recovery equipment.

Young further emphasises the in-house expertise that the company can draw on to develop these products from both Renttech SA and KLS‘s staff complement.
