Project Description
The project involves the construction of a 2.2 MW a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electro­lysis plant, which is expected to cover SZFG’s entire current demand for hydrogen.

A containerised plant will be erected in Salzgitter, which at full capacity will produce 400 Nm3 of hydrogen.

The necessary electrical power will be generated by seven wind turbines, with a capa­city of 30 MW.

Capital Expenditure
The cost of the project, including the construction of the wind turbines, and connecting these to the existing supply networks, is estimated at €50-million.

Planned Start/End Date
The plant is expected to start operation in the fourth quarter of 2020.

The wind turbines are expected to enter service from 2020.

Latest Developments
Siemens Gas and Power has been awarded the contract to build the PEM plant, marking an important step towards hydrogen-based steelmaking.

The wind turbines will be erected by Avacon on the Salzgitter group site.
