Saldanha Bay LPG terminal to be operational late next year
Terminal operator Sunrise Energy has confirmed that the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) terminal under construction in Saldanha Bay, in the Western Cape, will be operational by late next year.
Sunrise Energy, which was awarded a concession by Transnet National Ports Authority to build and operate the terminal, said in a statement this week that it aimed to bring the major open-access LPG import and storage terminal on line by the last quarter of 2016.
Construction started in February 2014.
Phase 1 of the terminal, which included 5 500 t on-site storage and a multibuoy mooring system located in Big Bay, would enable the importation of up to 17 500 t/m of LPG.
“The project is designed in a modular way to respond to growth in demand, with an ultimate storage capacity of 16 500 t, corresponding to a throughput capacity of 52 000 t/m or 624 kt/y,” the company said in a statement.
The product would be offloaded from ships through a subsea and overland pipeline to the onshore terminal for blending and odourising before being despatched by road or pipeline to the customer.
