The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) and the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) on Friday welcomed the appointment of Vuyani Jarana as the new CEO of South African Airways (SAA).

He is the first permanent CEO to be appointed at the airline since 2014.

“He is a person with the requisite skills to stabilise and grow the public airline. He brings to SAA a successful and proven record in the business community – as evidenced by his leadership of one of our biggest cellular network companies in South Africa – charting a strong course for Vodacom at a time when the economy was reaching its weakest point in several years.

“As business, we have always argued for solid appointments at State-owned enterprises and welcome this appointment with the hope that the Minister and board will exercise the highest levels of corporate governance and allow the new CEO and his executive team the necessary support to turn around the operational performance of SAA,” commented Sacci CEO Alan Mukoki.

Outa noted in a separate statement on Friday that SAA now had a fighting chance to return to profitability and that Jarana’s business experience and executive acumen would be an asset to the troubled airline.

“Naturally, we would have expected the new appointee to have an extensive knowledge of the airline industry; however, this is not essential and we have faith in the new CEO’s abilities to rise to the challenge and fix the mess that [chairperson] Dudu Myeni has left the airline in,” said Outa chairperson Wayne Duvenage.
