South African Airways (SAA) will increase its capacity on its Cape Town and East London routes by deploying larger aircraft on specific days, following an increase in demand as a result of the start of the festive season, spokesperson Tlali Tlali said on Wednesday.

SAA operates daily flights between Johannesburg and Cape Town, as well as between Johannesburg and East London, and said the frequencies on the routes would remain the same.

“[However] we have [decided to] deploy bigger aircraft on specific days, thus increasing capacity and enabling us to meet the demand,” Tlali explained.

The airline reminded passengers interested in flying on these routes to follow the normal booking and reservations procedures, which remained in place.

Meanwhile, SAA said the scheduled regular operations to East London, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town would stay the same, explaining that the special air transport arrangements to the funeral service of former president Nelson Mandela was handled through a separate mechanism.

“This chartered service is for guests invited by the State and details regarding that service are communicated directly to the guests at the time when they are invited,” the airline said.
