National carrier South African Airways (SAA) proposes to introduce another West Africa–US link as an air route between Accra, in Ghana, and Washington, in the US, from August.

The development formed part of the State-owned airliner’s long-term turnaround strategy.

“With a strong presence in West Africa, in the form of nonstop services between Accra and Washington DC and, through our airline partnerships, our customers will soon have access to further destinations in West Africa,” SAA acting CEO Nico Bezuidenhout commented on Wednesday.

SAA also entered into a bilateral codeshare agreement with Africa World Airlines, offering SAA customers from Washington and Johannesburg connections through Accra to other destinations in Ghana, such as Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale, as well as to Lagos, Nigeria.

“From Washington, SAA offers convenient connections to and from over 50 markets in the US and Canada through its airline partners United Airlines, JetBlue Airways and Virgin America,” he pointed out.

SAA, which currently operated daily flights between Johannesburg and Accra, would introduce four weekly flights – Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays – to Washington from Accra using A340-600 aircraft.

The airline would continue its three current weekly flights from Johannesburg to Washington, with a stopover in Dakar, Senegal, while three of the weekly flights from Accra to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, would also continue.
