The ZACR  (0.03 MB)

Company Announcement -The South African Internet community this week congratulated the country's central domain name registry on the achievement of registering one million active .za domains.

The ZA Central Registry confirms that today's (Friday, 23 January) tally of registered, active domain names ending in .za is 1 001 464. The ZACR operates co.za, web.za, org.za, net.za and the recently-launched cTLDs (city Top Level Domains) of .capetown ('dotCapeTown'), .joburg ('dotJoburg') and .durban ('dotDurban). "When the first .za domains were registered in 1992, few in the South African Internet industry ever expected the total to ever go beyond 100 000, let alone ten times that amount. The one million milestone represents a great vote of confidence in the world class .za domain name system," said Lucky Masilela, CEO of ZACR.

Please see www.registry.net.za /domain_stats.php?gen=1&contentid=104 for the latest .za registration statistics, as well as a breakdown of the numbers according to co.za, web.za, org.za, net.za and the cTLDs.

"While the overwhelming majority of .za domains are .co.za, it is encouraging to see the great variety of .za domain names that registrants can now choose from. This points to a well-established and effective registry operator that is able to adequately provide for the needs of the local domain name industry," concluded Mr Masilela.
