The long-awaited South African Space Agency is expected to be established in March next year, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Deputy Minister Dr Rob Davies announced.

The establishment of the agency is part of the DTI and the Department of Science and Technology's strategy for a sustainable, economical and growing aerospace industry, which is a component of its broader advanced manufacturing technology strategy.

The agency will serve as an institutional vehicle for the coordination and implementation of South Africa's national space science and technology programmes.

The agency is expected to conduct long-term planning and implementation of space-related activities in South Africa for the benefit of all citizens. It will coordinate its activities with the South African Council for Space Affairs and stakeholders, and will report to the Minister of Science and Technology.
