Besides guaranteeing that the electrical motor winding of the HIPPO Flameproof Slurry Submersible Pump® will never burn out – provided that all the safety controls are connected – the pump has earned a reputation as the safest flameproof submersible pump in the world.

When HAZLETON PUMPS® designed and developed the first HIPPO Medium/High Voltage Flameproof High Head Submersible Pump® in the world it installed special controls in the pump to ensure that the pump could not cause any damage should the mechanical seals fail. In most applications the pumps have to operate for up 30 meters under water in an environment where methane gas is present and a mechanical seal failure could have very serious consequences.

Furthermore, the pump must have the capability to run dry continuously without overheating. To achieve this objective the stator housing is filled with oil which removes the heat generated by the electrical winding to the pumps stator housing, allowing the pump to run dry continuously.

HAZLETON PUMPS® participated at the CIM exhibition in Vancouver, Canada in May 2018. The exhibition was very well attended and a major success. HAZLETON PUMPS® has participated in several major mining exhibitions in Canada and the response from the mining industry in Canada and the USA was exceptional. The CIM is regarded as the main showcase for exhibiting mining equipment.

Since 2003 the HIPPO Flameproof Submersible Pump Range® has been used in Canada and numerous USA mines specifically came to exhibition to gather information on the HIPPO Flameproof Submersible Pump Range® which complies to the IEC 60079 flameproof requirements.

All USA companies more or less had the same requirement which is that the pump should be able to operate at a duty of 650 feet (approximately 200 meters) and it became obvious that the closed coal mines in the USA would likely be brought back into production.

The HIPPO Flameproof  Medium Voltage  Submersible Pump  Range® was developed to pump high heads of 300 meters therefore HAZLETON PUMPS® is able to quote this option to all underground coal mines in Canada and the USA.

The driver of this demand for coal and the basis of the numerous enquiries fielded by HAZLETON PUMPS® , is that President Donald Trump is bringing USA companies back to manufacture in the USA, and it is predicted that there might be a power shortage. This will result in the old coal fired power stations being started up in the short term.

Protection installed in the HIPPO Flameproof Slurry Submersible Pump Range®

The pump is also fitted with two mechanical seals, both lubricated by the oil in the stator housing and the lower seal chamber.

Each of the above-mentioned oil chambers is fitted with a probe that measures the conductivity of the oil and should the seals fail, the oil will become conductive and the power supply to pump will be disconnected before any damage is caused to the electrical winding. HAZLETON PUMPS® guarantees that if the probes are mounted to the control panel – the electrical winding cannot fail.

When the electrical winding fails on a submersible pump the cost of the winding repair is about 60% of the repair cost of the pump, making the total cost of ownership attractive.

All the HIPPO Submersible Slurry Pumps® are also fitted with thermistors to detect mechanical failure of the bearings and vibration sensors are fitted to 2-pole pumps.

The HIPPO Submersible Slurry Pumps® are manufactured to operate on either 50 Hz or 60 Hz power supplies and have a local content of at least 95%.

At present more than 60% of the pumps produced in South Africa by HAZLETON PUMPS® are being exported.
