Name of the Project
Rukwa coal-to-power project.

Location
Tanzania.

Client
Edenville Energy.

Project Description
A scoping study completed on the project has indicated an economically sound project with relatively low capital expenditure (capex) and a 50-year life-of-mine. A small-scale mine and power plant (coal-to-power) scenario to provide electricity for local markets has been identified as having the best balance for shareholder return, deliverability and achievable capital requirements.

The Rukwa coal-to-power project hosts 171-million tons of measured and indicated coal, sufficient to support a 120 MW power station over the life of the project.

Latest Developments
Edenville is mulling its options to leverage the opportunity that the Tanzanian government’s immediate ban on coal imports provides for the Rukwa coal-to-power project developer.

Tanzania’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals has banned the import of coal to unlock the development potential of the local coal industry by stimulating local commercial production of the country’s resources.

While Edenville is well positioned to progress the project rapidly into production, an effort that remains a core focus, the ban has presented a significant near-term opportunity for coal sales and the company is reviewing its options to contribute.

“The company, through its Tanzanian subsidiary, holds a mining licence over its Mkomolo deposit and can also source coal from primary mining licences in the nearby Namwele deposit, where mining has previously occurred,” Edenville has said in an update.

The company is reviewing several obtained quotations for mining and associated infrastructure work at the project site and has entered into discussions with other possible contractors and suppliers for the project.

“We have also revised our bulk sample programme to target additional areas that may have suitability for near-term supply of coal. Suitable areas are being stripped to expose coal to be taken for testing. In parallel, we are discussing with various potential customers their future requirements,” the company has added.
