JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) on Friday said it was investigating a collision between a locomotive and a bus carrying 45 people at a platinum mine, in Rustenburg, on Friday morning.

The accident occurred on a mine siding when the bus transporting mineworkers stalled on the railway tracks, resulting in a collision with an oncoming locomotive.

The RSR said that, while there had been no fatalities, 30 people had been transported to the Impala Hospital, with two people critically injured.

Another eight had sustained minor injuries and 15 had been treated for shock.

“The RSR has rolled out level crossing safety campaigns in various provinces because of the increase in such incidents. We urge motorists to practise caution when approaching level crossings. The RSR is in the process of identifying all the hotspots in our country to reduce the number of fatalities at level crossings and to ensure that the railways in our country are safe,” RSR CEO Nkululeko Poya commented.
