Gearing up for growth
Large fabricator and rolling stock manufacturer Galison Manufacturing reports that it is well positioned to take advantage of government’s planned major increased spend on wagons and locomotives as part of its National Infrastructure Plan.
Galison Manufacturing claims that it is one of the few companies in South Africa with both the skills and facilities to manufacture both complete wagons and major components for wagons, bogies and locomotives on the scale required by South African rail company Transnet and the Passanger Rail Association of South Africa (PRASA).
Galison Manufacturing chairperson Peter Thorburn says the cars are similar to a train that the company designed and supplied to gold miner AngloGold Ashanti’s Kopanong gold mine, in the North West, about three years ago.
“Galison, long dominant in the manufacture of underground wagons for the mining industry, has been making and repairing wagons for private rail operators for almost 20 years. This includes a range of ore-carrying wagons for the platinum, gold, nickel and copper sectors, as well as more general freight wagons, such as flat cars, ballast cars and tankers,” says Thorburn.
In addition, Galison Manu-facturing has in the past made parts such as roofs for locomotives and subframe assemblies for bogies. It recently also made a large number of side panels for new manganese wagons for Transnet.
Galison’s customers include all the major mining companies and other private rail operators, such as steel manuacturing company AccelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) and French construction materials supplier Lafarge.
The company recently concluded contracts for new rolling stock and repair work at platinum miner Anglo Platinum, gold miner Harmony Gold and AMSA. It is also pursuing opportunities in Mozambique for ballast and flat cars required for the track laying activity taking place on the Sena railway line.
Galison’s manufacturing facilities are extensive and include undercover factory space of over 23 000 m2, which is serviced by 25 overhead cranes. It has an extensive range of steel processing equipment, including three large plasma cutters, computer numerically controlled (CNC) press brakes, CNC drills, automatic saws, robotic and conventional welders, large CNC lathes, milling machines and all other modern equipment for medium and heavy fabrication requirements.
The manufacturing facilities are complemented by a design department working with the latest AutoCAD design software technology and staff capable of designing to Association of American Railroads specifications. Most of the wagons Galison manufactures and repairs are from its own designs.
Galison is 26% black-owned and is also pursuing partnerships with small South African enterprises to develop them as subcontractors so that it can fulfil the requirements of Transnet’s procurement policies.
