The 138 MW Roggeveld wind farm, in the Karoo, is one of five wind projects across the country to have been awarded preferred bidder status in the fourth round of government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).

Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson on Thursday announced 13 preferred bidders for window four of the renewable energy programme, bringing the number of projects approved under this programme to 79 and either adding or set to add a total of 5 243 MW of renewable energy bid to the national grid.

Roggeveld project developer G7 Renewable Energies cofounder Dr Killian Hagemann said in a statement that the project site had been selected after an extensive and rigorous investigation.

“The ideal site comprises several factors, such as wind resources, topography, grid proximity and capacity, accessibility, as well as reduced environmental and permitting constraints.

“In what has now become a very competitive industry, the financial viability of a wind farm depends on the quality of the wind resource available at the identified site. The accuracy of our wind measurements and the predictability of the future yield are key to establishing the long-term success of the project,” he commented.

Energy group Building Energy was the main sponsor of the Roggeveld project, bidding it in the fourth window of the REIPPPP with the support of G7.
