Company Announcement - The Archbishop Thabo Cecil Makgoba Development Trust has selected Rhodes Business School to host an Annual Lecture on Values Based Leadership, the first of which will commence in 2016. Archbishop Thabo Makgoba will officially handover the donation on Tuesday, 28 October 2014 to Rhodes University’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr Sizwe Mabizela. The endowment is a once-off contribution towards the lecture that will be invested and the proceeds used annually to host the Annual Lecture and also award a prize to a student whose outstanding essay or publication will be based on Values Based Leadership. “In honour of our parents who have raised and nurtured us through values, my wife, Lungi and I, together with the Trustees of the ATCMDT, wish to endow in perpetuity an Annual Lecture at Rhodes Business School on Values Based leadership or decision making,” said Archbishop Makgoba.
“Rhodes Business School is proud to have been chosen by The Archbishop Thabo Makgoba Development Trust to host an annual lecture on values based leadership,” said Director of the Rhodes Business School, Professor Owen Skae.
“I suppose some people may be surprised that a Business School has been given this honour. Rhodes Business School has as its essence ‘Leadership for Sustainability’ and we place huge emphasis on responsible leadership and ethics,” he said. According to Prof Skae, all leaders and managers, irrespective of the organizational context in which they lead and manage, whether that be private or public sector, profit or non-profit, big or small, civil society or representative of a particular constituency, should and must apply value based leadership if we are to create a society for every citizen to fulfill their potential. “We hope that this Annual Lecture will provide inspiration, critical reflection and solutions to contemporary societal challenges and opportunities that ultimately require leaders to make the right decisions for the right reasons. It is intention therefore that the values that are addressed will be universal in nature,” he added.
Accepting the endowment, Dean of Commerce, Professor David Sewry said, “The Faculty of Commerce at Rhodes University comprises a number of academic departments, as well as the Rhodes Business School. As Dean of the Faculty, I would like most sincerely to thank the Archbishop for the endowment. “The Business School is an integral part of the academic project of the Faculty, and the endowment will further enhance the School’s position within the Faculty, as well as more broadly in business and society. The Values Based Leadership on which the endowment centres resonates extraordinarily well with the Business School, the Faculty and the University,” he added. The ATCMDT aims to have a greater social impact by addressing social economic challenges such as poverty, inequality and unemployment. It aims to provide educational opportunities, skills and entrepreneurial development as well as promote health awareness.
