Welcome to Creamer Media’s Resources Watch, a weekly video round-up of the events and people making and shaping the news in the mining industry.

This week:
Wits says research on South Africa’s ‘future mine’ needs to begin now.
Eskom is in talks with miners in a bid to replenish dry, coarse coal stocks.
And, ARM’s Patrice Motsepe admits abandoning potential African projects amid ‘ethical’ issues.

Research into South Africa’s 'mine of the future' needs to begin immediately, says University of the Witwatersrand School of Mining Engineering head Fred Cawood.

Electricity utility Eskom and the Chamber of Mines are in talks about urgently replenishing stockpiles of coarse coal at its power stations, as these stocks have been depleted over the past two weeks as much of the country has experienced a protracted period of wet weather.

African Rainbow Minerals chairperson Patrice Motsepe has noted that, while the company had been looking at opportunities in Africa “very seriously”, potential strategic partnerships and projects on the continent had come into conflict with what he described as the company’s “strong principles of ethics and good governance”.
