Turnkey refractory project specialist, the Dickinson Group, was awarded a contract for the installation of refractories of the blast furnace in Mittal Steel’s capital expenditure programme. The contract included the supply of in excess of 1 500 t of refractory materials and anchors.

A joint venture was set up with Pirson Refractories of the Nether-lands, part of the Pirson Group, in a bid to minimise costs and enhance erection time.

The contract involved the lining of a new bustle main; a new blast furnace hearth; tuyre; the prebricking of copper and cast-iron staves; the installation of monolithic refractories in the furnace dome; the off-gas system and ancillary equipment. The preshut activities encompassed in the contract were executed during the months of November and December and the shutdown activities are currently being completed.
