President Jacob Zuma’s recognition of South Africa’s emerging biofuels sector in the 2014 State of the Nation Address (SoNA) underscored the relevance of the industry to the country’s economic growth plans, South African biofuels company Mabele Fuels said on Monday.

During the SoNA, Zuma announced that “biofuels manufacturers have been selected and have started work”, which Mabele joint CEO Zahir Williams said was a “major recognition of the biofuels industry's large-scale agricultural job creation and rural development prospects”.

Mabele also lauded Zuma’s commitment to implementing the first phase of the National Development Plan between 2014 and 2019.

“As a new investor in the economy, we welcome this clarity and certainty on the macro planning and policy trajectory of the country. Being a majority black-owned company pioneering the industrialisation of the biofuels industry, we are consistently collaborating with government, farmers, funders and investors to develop the biofuels industry for the benefit of the economy,” Williams said.

Mabele Fuels was at an advanced state of readiness to start construction of a large-scale 150-million-litre-a-year bioethanol refinery in Bothaville, in the Free State, with the refinery scheduled for completion before October 1, 2015, when the blending of bioethanol with petroleum would become mandatory.

The company added that it was, therefore, eagerly awaiting the finalisation of the Biofuels Regulatory Framework, to ensure the timely start of its refinery engineering works, construction and grain sorghum harvesting programme.
