Water utility Rand Water will invest more than R17-billion in infrastructure development during its five-year infrastructure development plan, which ends in 2020.

Rand Water Zuikerbosch water treatment plant executive manager Eddie Singo told the media during a site visit that the infrastructure plan aimed to meet increased demand, which had been growing at a yearly rate of between 4.6% to 4.8%.

He highlighted that the bulk of the investments would be focused on improving and renewing pipeline and purification infrastructure.

Singo explained that, during the five-year period, Rand Water would spend about R8.1-billion on pipeline projects, R3.7-billion on purification projects, R2.7-billion on pumping projects, R1.3-billion on reservoir projects, and about R1.9-billion on other projects, such as increasing electricity supply and control systems.

The projects are divided into infrastructure augmentation and renewal projects.

Rand Water will spend about R1.3-billion on augmentation and about R1.7-billion on renewal projects this year. Next year, about R1.6-billion will be spent on augmentation and about R2.4-billion on renewal. About R1.7-billion, R1.5-billion and R1.6-billion will be spent on augmentation projects during 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively, while renewal projects will total R2.2-billion, R1.8-billion and R1.6-billion respectively over this timeframe.

Rand Water owns and operates the 3 890 Mℓ/d Zuikerbosch and the 1 200 Mℓ/d Vereeniging water treatment plants, in Vereeniging.

Both facilities receive water from the Lesotho Highlands Project, where the water is treated and then pumped to the Eikenhoff, Mapleton, Palmiet and Zwartkopjes pumpstations, in Johannesburg.

Meanwhile, Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane commissioned several projects at Zuikerbosch in May. This resulted in an additional 200 Mℓ/d for the water treatment plant, earmarked for the commissioning of the Filter House 2B project, and new flocculation and sedimentation tanks at Station 3.

The increased capacity will provide four-million consumers with potable water.

Further, Mokonyane turned the sod at the Station 5 project, which will add about 1 200 Mℓ/d to Zuikerbosch’s capacity. The project will be constructed in a phased approach, with Phase 5A comprising two components. The first will provide an additional 300 Mℓ/d when commissioned in 2018 and the second an additional 300 Mℓ/d, but the date of commissioning is yet to be determined.

Following the commissioning of Phase 5A, investigations will start for the feasibility of Phase 5B.
