Project Description
The project entails the upgrade of the 160 km R573 Moloto road.
The upgrade is one of the strategic infrastructure projects being undertaken by government to revive the South African economy.
The project forms part of the Moloto Corridor, which will include investment in passenger rail services to connect Gauteng with Mpumalanga and Limpopo. The road will not be tolled.
Potential Job Creation
About 12 500 jobs are expected to be created across the three provinces.
Capital Expenditure
It is expected that R5-billion will be invested in the upgrade over five years.
Duration
The project is expected to take 36 months to complete.
Latest Developments
Responding to a Parliamentary question in May 2022, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said that as part of the design phase for the Moloto road upgrade project, Sanral was engaged in consultations with 139 affected landowners for the land acquisition process to be finalised.
Should the land-related matters be settled soon enough, Mbalula said, Sanral intended to go out on tender by June 2023, with mobilisation extending from November 2023 to February 2024, when the 36-month construction phase would start.
