Project Description
The project entails the rehabilitation of the R399 between Piketberg and Velddrif, in the Western Cape, totalling 56 km. It is estimated that up to 1 900 vehicles use this road every day, and will benefit from the rehabilitation. The department has also included the rehabilitation of 2.7 km of the MR527 from the MR529 (the Piketberg intersection described above) to the MR531.

Improvements to this section of the MR527 will include the widening and resurfacing of the existing road.

Jobs to Be Created
A total of 149 019 person days of work have been created for the Berg river area community.

Value
R352-million.

Duration
The R 399 project started construction in November 2014 and is scheduled for completion towards the end of June this year.

Work on the MR527 started in January and will be completed in June.

Latest Developments
About 78% of the contract works have been completed.

Ten road sections – a total of about 40 km of road – have been completed to date.

The upgrading of the Velddrif intersection (R27/R399) as well as the bridge-widening work on the Boesmans river bridge has been completed to a high standard.

The widening of the Platkloof river bridge has started and is expected to be completed by the end of May.
