The R227-million rehabilitation of the R298 on the R43 between Worcester and Wyzersdrift, in the Western Cape, has started, the provincial Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) has said.

The project, which was expected to be completed towards the end of 2017, would include the widening of the Breede river bridge and the repair of other structures along the section of the road.

The project was expected to create “significant” job opportunities, at an estimated 50 000 person days, for people located within the boundaries of the Breede Valley region. Thirty per cent of the contract value was expected to go towards targeted enterprises within the Cape Winelands district municipality.

Meanwhile, the DTPW had also started the R178-million rehabilitation and resurfacing of the R230 and the R231 in the Moorreesburg area, which would see the construction of stormwater structures and the installation of road signs and road markings.

Expected to be completed by early 2017, the project would create 18 000 person days of employment opportunities.
