The R215-million roadworks project on the R310 between Vlaeberg road and Vlottenburg road, near Stellenbosch, will be completed at the end of July, the Western Cape government said on Tuesday.

It noted that traffic was already flowing freely, with about 14 000 motorists using the road every day and that a new set of traffic lights would be activated next week. This followed two years after construction started.

A dual carriageway was built on a section between Vlaeberg and Vlottenburg and an access road to Lynedoch was built. Works also included road-over-rail bridges, river culverts and four cattle creeps.

The Vlottenburg road/rail underpass and the Klein Welmoed rail underpass culverts would ease the flow of road traffic across the railway line, with motorists no longer needing to wait for trains to pass.

“Rail commuters will also benefit because there will be fewer places where trains are required to slow down. A new service road between Vlaeberg and Vlottenburg will be proclaimed as a provincial road after four level crossings along this route have been eliminated,” the statement read.

The provincial Department of Transport and Public Works created a significant number of employment opportunities through the project.

As part of job creation measures, it spent R22.9-million on supplying goods and services from black economic-empowered enterprises and R7.5-million, or 33 930 person days, on local labour from the Cape Winelands District.
